iZotope is based in Cambridge, MA, just across the Charles River from Boston, a great city with a legendary music scene. Spend a summer afternoon driving to the beach with any classic rock station blaring and you’re bound to hear one of the well-known anthems by favorites like Aerosmith, Boston, or The Cars. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that Boston has a rich history in alternative music, with bands like Mission of Burma, Gang Green, and The Pixies setting the stage for groups like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Morphine, The Lemonheads, and Dropkick Murphys.
There’s also a deep community of singer/songwriters rooted in legendary venues like Club Passim where Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, and Tom Rush got their start. Schools like Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory have trained and incubated artists like Passion Pit and Lake Street Dive, but also nurture a thriving jazz scene. Also, we can’t forget about New Edition’s contributions to early Rap and Hip Hop. Now, new sounds from Speedy Ortiz to The Magnetic Fields continue to bring unique ideas from Boston to the rest of the world.
We know the Boston music scene has a lot more going on than just the acts who have seen mainstream success. As part of our Sounds of Summer series, we dug deep into the stacks of wax over at SoundCloud to highlight some of the great music being made in Boston. With so much to choose from, it’s hard to narrow it down, so we tried to focus on the burgeoning electronic music, hip-hop, and indie rock scenes.
We set some simple criteria:
Here’s what we found, recommended for a nice afternoon listen in the shade with a good book.
We found so much great music on SoundCloud that we’ll be publishing new playlists all summer long, and one of them might feature your music! Follow iZotope over at SoundCloud to keep in touch, and be sure to use the hashtags #iZotope and #soundsofsummer whenever you post something new to SoundCloud and publicize it on social media. We’re listening and looking forward to hearing your next hit!
